We learned in this section, in perek 1, about Yirmiyahu's appointment as a Navi. The first sign he receives is a makel shaked - a flowering almond branch. The most basic idea is that the destruction is impending and fast approaching destruction. 
However, there is perhaps another idea relating to his appointment as a Kohen to a unique position much like the flowering staff of Aharon Hakohen. Rabbi Dovid Sabato explores this fascinating idea more fully in his article on the topic.
